The Marina/The Presidio
The Marina is a low-rise, trendy area to live and play, especially for twenty and thirty-somethings. Marina Boulevard starts at Fort Mason, lines the San Francisco Bay and ends at The Presidio. There is boat marina, and a large park where people play volley ball, fly a kite, jog and roller-blade on nice days. At Fort Mason, there are some museums such as The Mexican Museum, a theatre, and the famous vegetarian restaurant Greens, with a fabulous view. There are also exhibition halls that periodically feature various shows/events, such as the antiques show in the fall, vintage posters, and wine-tasting events, etc.

A few streets up from The Bay and one street below Lombard Street, is the popular Chestnut Street. Trendy boutiques, movie theatres, popular stores such as The Pottery Barn, Rabat (high-end shoes), The Gap, cafes, and restaurants line this street between Fillmore Street and Divisidero Street. A great place to stop for a rest and enjoy a delicious Mexican meal while taking in the street scene, is Andale Taqueria.

Lombard Street is the main street to drive through to the Golden Gate Bridge and is lined with an abundance of reasonable hotels, restaurants and bars.

A few streets up from Lombard is the very fashionable Union Street which is about where Pacific Heights begins to start. Upscale and tres chic restaurants, boutiques, home décor and beauty salons are located here between Van Ness Avenue and Steiner Street.

The Presidio is a national park full of history, featuring hiking, golfing, and art and history exhibitions. Currently, there is an interesting exhibit entitled "Unseen Treasures of Imperial Russia and The New World" at the Presidio Officers' Club Exhibition Hall until June 15, when it moves on to go to Moscow. For more details about The Presidio and its attractions, go to www.atthepresidio.org.

Right on the edge of The Presidio and The Marina, is the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts, originally built as part of a World's Fair exposition way back when. Today it is a great place for a romantic picnic or stroll, and is home to the Exploratorium, which features interactive science exhibits that appeals especially to children. Special events are also held at the auditorium at the Palace of Fine Arts, located at Marina Boulevard and Baker Street.
