CHINATOWN in San Francisco has the largest population of Chinese people outside of China. It's a fascinating place for exploring. There are great stores for buying jewelry (and sometimes they will negotiate a price with you), linens, Chinese art supplies, exotic food stores, cooking utensils, dishware, and all kinds of souvenirs. Have you ever tried Dim Sum? This is when many of the restaurants serve all kinds of little plates of appetizers that you choose from carts that the waiters push around the room. It's a very enjoyable, adventurous experience! One of my favorites is New Asia at 772 Pacific Ave. (415-391-6666), but there are lots of great places to choose from.

Other places you might want to squeeze into your day include: JAPANTOWN, around Geary and Post, for some delicious sushi and unique shopping; NOB HILL, to take a look around the beautiful Gothic-inspired GraceCathedral and then have a drink at the world-famous Top of the Mark (415-616-6916) with its fabulous views or the newly refurbished Fairmont Hotel (415-772-5000). For a blast from the past, specifically The Sixties and The Summer of Love, when the hippies ruled, go to THE HAIGHT, with its most famous corner at Haight Ashbury. You'll get a feel for what it was like "back then". Lots of fun shops, and some good restaurants |
