| Union Square is the shopping mecca of San Francisco. Almost all of the major stores and world-class boutiques can be found here or nearby. You'll find Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and the venerable San Franciscan super high-end store Gump's, which seems more like a contemporary museum in some ways. There are the flagship stores of Nike, Banana Republic, The Gap and Levi's. There are the world-class boutiques of Gucci, Hermes, Celine, Armani and Chanel. And there are a lot of other specialized boutiques for everything from home décor, children's clothing and toys, hand-knit sweaters, English shirts, and so on. Down the street a few blocks to Market at Fifth Street, is the elegant San Francisco Centre, where you'll find Nordstrom, famous for its excellent customer service, as well as many other stores. Nearby at Market and Fourth Street, is the lively Sony Metreon entertainment complex, which features a movie theatre complex, with an IMAX screen, stores, and restaurants.
When you get tired of shopping, there are also plenty of restaurants, hotels, art galleries, theatres, and nightclubs for diversion. A fun way to take in the sights of San Francisco is to take a cable car on Powell Street in front of the venerable Westin St. Francis Hotel, which ends up down at Ghiradelli Square overlooking the bay. Union Square flanked by Post, Geary, Powell and Stockton Streets, and Sutter and Grant Streets, as well as the closed-to-traffic Maiden Lane, is where you'll find a plethora of fine stores, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. |
